What is the best camera for a budding photographer?
I’m really interested in photography and want to get a really good camera. I love taking close up photos and night photos.
Cost is somewhat of an issue, but i have a reasonable budget. about $2000 AUS.
If anyone knows of a website to compare cameras or something similar that’d be great.
I would suggest a lower end body, and use the remainder of your budget for a couple of decent lenses.
Second only to the person behind the camera, lenses are arguably the lifeblood of photography. Camera bodies are overrated and are marketed to make you believe that the better the body, the better the photo. Like most advertisement that is patently false.
Don’t be afraid of the used market as well. Everything I own is used and I got most of it at a steal.

Nikon D5000 is what I would get if I was a new photographer. Nikon makes the best cameras, and they’re known for their photo quality.
When it comes to the kind of pictures you want, you’ll need to invest in different lenses. I use the kit lens that will most likely come with your camera for almost everything, and then use a 70-300mm for pictures of birds and other animals.
To take night shots you will need to invest in a tripod.
I would recommend looking on B&H photography. They are the best place to buy cameras and camera equipment off of.

Go to http://www.dpreview.com. That’s the best place to look over cameras and get an unbiased review (a biased view is such that one says Nikon is the BEST camera out there… each camera manufacturer has their plus and minus, try not to get wrapped up in the age old "which is the best camera" argument).
There are a lot of brands out there: Canon + Nikon (by far the largest market), Sony, Pentax, Olympus….the list goes on and on. Make your own INFORMED decision, in the end, it’s YOU that makes the photograph, not the camera…
And one more word about the "lens kits" you get when you buy your entry level dSLR. Most of the time they are cheaper end glass. Great for a starter, but you’ll find to get truly sharp images, you’ll need that pricey glass. You’ll be surprised to see that glass will *sometimes* cost more than what your camera did….

I would suggest the Canon EOS 500D, It can also take video.
the lens is also a very important part. Don’t buy DSLRs with there bundled lenses. Buy the Camera Body and get a 18-200 mm Lens that comes cheap these days on ebay.
You can always do a camera feature search on the dpreview site: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense and Live View] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:
